A former para and coach in Cheney faces charges of having a sexual relationship with a student.
Kingman County Attorney Matt Ricke filed two counts against Layne Schroeder: unlawful sexual relations and contributing to a child's misconduct. Investigators say the incident happened back in June when Schroeder, then 31-years-old, had consensual sex with a 17 year-old girl. The incident is not alleged to have happened on school property.
Cheney Superintendent Tom Alstrom says the district has been aware of the allegations since the beginning of the school year. He says officials began investigating on a Friday in the Fall and by the next Monday the girl had recanted her statement to police. Alstrom says the district continued to follow up on the allegations. They spoke with Schroeder. The para and coach later submitted his resignation.
Alstrom says Schroeder never acted as coach to the girl.
Schroeder is scheduled to be in court later this month, though Ricke says the defense may ask the judge for more time to prepare its case.
