Former Offerle Grocery Store Burns

Call it a big fire in a small Kansas town.

Edwards County Sheriff Bryant Kurth tells us he's still looking for the cause of the blaze at the old grocery store in Offerle. The call came into 911 just after midnight Friday morning and took crews about three hours to douse. The flames were so big Kurth says one of his deputies could see it four miles away. At one point the walls caved in.

The building was empty, but still had electricity.

No one was hurt, but at least one nearby business sustained damage. Some windows at the cafe to the east of the building were broken.

Resident in part of the town also lost power. Crews from Midwest Energy were out last night work on the problem.

Kurth says it took at least 20 firefighters from two departments, Offerle and Kinsley, to get the flames under control. He'll be there again today to investigate further, including talking to the person who called in the fire.
