Suspect in Triple Shooting Charged With Murder

by Kim Hynes (WICHITA, Kan.)

Authorities charge a 22-year-old Wichita man for a triple shooting that left one person dead. Frederick Fritz was charged with first degree murder, three attempts of first degree murder and aggravated robbery.

Wichita police say Fritz shot three people Monday at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of west 13th Street. 24-year-old Devon Cole died a day later. The other two victims are expected to be okay.

A check of court records Thursday, found Fritz was out on bond when the shooting happened. On July 13th, Fritz was charged with burglary and theft from an incident that happened in 2008. He was accused of breaking into a residence and stealing electronics and credit cards. On July 22nd, he bonded out of jail on a $10,000 bond. His next court date was scheduled for August 3rd, the same day as the shooting.

Fritz is now being held on a $3 million bond. He's expected to be back in court August 17th.

Friends say Devon Cole was quiet, but would do anything for a friend in need.  Cole, 24, died late Tuesday night after a shooting on Monday.

"He tried to liven everything up, you know?" says LaTisha Brooks.  "If it was a bad day, he'd try to make people smile.  If they're not smiling, then he felt like his job wasn't done."

Brooks went to high school in Wichita with Cole, and the two kept in touch over the Internet.  She heard his name on the news Wednesday and knew she'd lost a friend.

Wichita Police believe Cole and two others were shot as part of a robbery attempt.  Investigators say a 22-year-old suspect met a group of people, including Cole, at a bar and went to an apartment for a party in the 3800 block of W. 13th Street.

Brooks says Cole was a generous person, and the shooting doesn't make any sense.

"It was dumb the fact that you had to go and shoot somebody," says Brooks.  "I mean, he would have given you the money if you asked for it.  There was no sense in the shooting.  There was no sense in him having to die just because of something like that."

Police arrested a suspect shortly after the shooting on West Kellogg.  Homicide detectives believe the other two shooting victims will recover.  A 33-year-old man has already been released from the hospital, while a 24-year-old woman is still receiving treatment.

Police plan to meet with prosecutors to discuss possible charges Thursday morning.

UPDATE:

Wichita police say one of three people shot earlier this week has died.  24-year-old Devon Cole of Wichita was pronounced dead at the hospital late Tuesday, one day after being shot at an apartment in the 3800 block of W. 13th Street.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting, which sent two others to the hospital with less serious injuries.

Charges are pending against that suspect.

Cole is the 20th homicide in Wichita in 2009.

Wichita police say robbery is the motive behind a shooting that left three people hurt.   It happened around 11:40 last night at an apartment in Morgan's Landing complex.

Police say the suspect met a group of people at a bar, then they went back to an apartment for a party.   Police say the suspect pulled a gun and robbed them at the apartment - firing several shots in the process.

The suspect was arrested a short time later after being spotted driving on Kellogg.  He's in jail on two counts of attempted first degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated assault.

A 25-year-old woman was shot several times in the chest, and a 34-year-old man was shot in the face. Both were taken a Wichita hospital. The woman is in serious condition. The man is listed as critical.

A third shooting victim was found a short time later with wounds to his face. He's in fair condition at the hospital.
