Wichita Man Wants City's Help To Restore Joyland

By Joe Fenton & Angela Smith (WICHITA, Kan.)

A Wichita man would like the city council's help to bring a 60-year-old landmark back to life.

Jerry Dowdy wants to reopen the Joyland Amusement Park.  Not only does he want to restore the rides and attraction, he would also like to open a school for the blind and a youth outreach program on the grounds.

"We want to put in a skateboard park, different attractions. We would like to see if we couldn't go back to battle of the bands with KFDI," says Dowdy.  "There are a million things we would like to do. I could talk to you an hour and not talk about all of it."

One major obstacle standing in the way of Dowdy's dream.  He needs financial assistance.

Tuesday, Dowdy plans to ask the Wichita City Council for a $2 million loan or grant to buy the Joyland property.  Dowdy says he's been talking with others about donations and financial assistance.

For Dowdy, this is about more than just reviving a Wichita landmark.  He says it's about helping those in need.  "This is all non-proffit. We're not trying to get rich off it, we just want it to work, is the biggest thing of it all."
