Fireworks Will Be Allowed in Bel Aire

Update:

Come July 4th, Bel Aire residents will be able to light up the sky.

Tuesday night, the city council approved an ordinance that would allow fireworks to be discharged in the city only on July 44th from 9 a.m. to midnight when the holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday and until 11 p.m. when it falls on Sunday through Thursday.

Council members said the response was overwhelming.  They say most people support the change.

Fireworks will be allowed on July 4th, but the issue will still go to a vote the following November. Council members say it will be a trial run.  If residents don't like the change they can make their voice heard on the ballot.

City council members in Bel Aire could vote on a proposed fireworks ordinance Tuesday night.

Currently, Bel Aire does not have an ordinance, which means residents are not allowed to use fireworks of any kind.

Supporters say it’s their right to be able to celebrate Independence Day and have collected signatures to take to the council.

There has been some opposition, including one resident who asked that the issue be put to a vote.

The proposal would allow fireworks to be discharged in the city only on July 4th from 9 a.m. to midnight when the holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday and until 11 p.m. when it falls on Sunday through Thursday.

Council members are expected to discuss and possibly vote on the issue during the council meeting Tuesday night.
