The Storyteller
October 23 - January 3
Salina Art Center - 242 S. Santa Fe - Salina
Responding to the rapid, often violent transformations of the twenty-first century, contemporary artists have displayed a growing desire to activate art's documentary capacity: its ability to bear witness to events in the world. The Storyteller focuses on artists who use the story form as a means of comprehending and conveying political and social events. For them, the story functions neither as a purely imagined narrative nor as a piece of verifiable information. It is at once temporal and personal, public and communal, persisting through the listener's interpretive process and through each subsequent retelling.Working in video, photography, drawing, mixed media, and installation, the international group of artists in The Storyteller neither takes the idea of documentary truth as an object of critique nor abandons fact for fabulation. Rather, they enable individuals-whether themselves, their subjects, or their audience-to construct the story of their unique participation in historical processes, thereby presenting these events in a new and unexpected light.

North Central Kansas Teens For Christ will feature Christian Hip-Hop artist Cash Hollistah (known off stage as James Curtis) at the Teens For Christ Rally. In the late 1800’s, a sheriff by the name of Cassius M. Hollister protected the people of a Kansas town. Armed with only a six shooter, the former U.S. Marshall restored order and peace to this once unruly place. Now, in the new millennium, there is a new sheriff in town. Instead of being armed with a six shooter, this Cashius Hollistah (a.k.a. Cash) is armed with a machine gun clip of brilliant rhymes, innovated beats and the word of God to restore order to the rap game. By gaining musical influence from everyone from the Winans to Jay-Z, Cash has been able to keep his sound fresh and uplifting. He uses his eclectic, fresh, smooth sound to express his profound perspective of the message of Christ.For more information about the November 21st Teens For Christ Rally, please call the Teens For Christ office at (785) 243-1154. Wichita Community Theatre Presents "Christmas Belles"
December 3 - 20 (Includes Sunday Performances)
Wichita Community Theatre
A church Christmas program spins hilariously out of control in this Southern farce about squabbling sisters, family secrets, a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep and a reluctant Elvis impersonator.It's Christmas-time in the small town of Fayro, Texas, and the Futrelle Sisters-Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye-are not exactly in a festive mood. A cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb's Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. But things are not looking too promising: Miss Geneva, the ousted director of the previous twenty-seven productions, is ruthless in her attempts to take over the show. The celebrity guest Santa Claus-played by Frankie's long-suffering husband, Dub-is passing a kidney stone. One of the shepherds refuses to watch over his flock by night without pulling his little red wagon behind him. And the entire cast is dropping like flies due to food poisoning from the Band Boosters' Pancake Supper. And when Frankie lets slip a family secret that has been carefully guarded for decades, all hope for a successful Christmas program seems lost, even with an Elvis impersonator at the manger. But in true Futrelle fashion, the feuding sisters find a way to pull together in order to present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget. Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world!

Jesus Christ Superstar
February 3
Concert Hall - Century II - 225 W. Douglas&nbs, p;
The first collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be performed on the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the most popular and enduring works ever created for musical theatre. Featuring such notable songs as "Superstar", "Everything's Alright" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him", Jesus Christ Superstar earned five Tony nominations.
Set in two acts, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Superstar dramatizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate and his ultimate crucifixion. Perpetually changing the face of musical theatre, Jesus Christ Superstar will leave audiences captivated by its power. As relevant and timeless as ever, Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera vision of "the greatest story every told," is perhaps more potent in today's troubled world than when it was first produced.
Tickets start at $43 and will be available at the Century II box office, online at www.wichitatix.com or by calling 316-219-4849. For more information on Jesus Christ Superstar and the rest of the 2009-10 Broadway Series at Century II Concert Hall, visit www.theaterleague.com/press.
