Abortion Protest Underway

by Cliff Judy

Police say the first day of an abortion protest in Wichita went without incident.  Operation Rescue plans to protest in front of Dr. George Tiller's clinic Friday through Monday, the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

Both abortion opponents and abortion rights supporters showed up for the protest, which began around noon.  The protest never got very large, reaching around 50 people at its peak.

Police were on hand to make sure the protest stayed peaceful.

Neighbors who live in the area say they deal with protests in front of Tiller's office a few times a year.  Jason Haag says he respects the right to protest, but he doesn't appreciate the trucks that drive through his neighborhood with pictures of dead fetuses on them.

"The disgusting pictures that I have to look at...I have a small child," says Haag.  "I have to drive past that every single day."

Abortion opponents say public reaction to the protest was mixed.

"The majority of people I see the thumbs up," says Richard Moss, "but then we get, of course, the gestures and what not.  Yeah, it's a mixture."

Police had planned a media briefing Friday afternoon.  They cancelled it because the protest remained peaceful throughout the day.
