Snowfall Piles Up Across Kansas

Posted: Updated:

Utility crews still trying to restore power after an ice storm are working with a new obstacle in some areas - up to a foot of snow.

The heaviest snow accumulations from Friday and Saturday's storm were in central Kansas, where Hays reported getting more than 13 inches. Elsewhere, accumulations ranged from an inch to five inches in western Kansas to about two inches in eastern Kansas.

Jennifer Stark, a meteorologist in Topeka, said the snow has made work worse for utility companies' trying to restore power from ice storms that hit the state before the snow came.

Westar was reporting about 19,000 outages yesterday. About 38,000 customers of rural electric cooperatives were without power Saturday, and updated numbers won't be available until today.

The winter storm is over and some areas of the state had over a foot of snowfall. The wind picked up out of the north early in the day Saturday, which did cause some blowing and drifting of the snow. Some snow drifts in the central Kansas were reported to be 5 foot deep.

Here are some snowfall reports from across the state:

Hays: 13.5"
Osborne: 12.0"
Dodge City: 10.4"
Hutchinson: 7"
Salina: 7"
Abilene: 6.0"
Wichita: officially 3", but there were some 4 inch amounts on the east side of town.

Snowfall amounts drop off rather quickly in southeast Kansas where most of the precipitation was in the form of a rain or snow mix.

Roads continue to be slushy to snowpacked in many areas. Sunshine and warmer temperatures can be expected the next few days, so the snow and leftover ice will begin melting.

The Emergency Accident Reporting Plan, or EARP, is in effect for Wichita but not for Sedgwick County. If you're in an accident, no one's hurt, no drugs or alcohol are involved and both cars are driveable - exchange information with the other driver and fill out an accident reporting form. You can fill that out online using the link below, or you can fill one out in person at Police Substations and area Quik Trip gas stations.
