The Wichita Police Department created 1,200 coins to commemorate law enforcement who investigated the BTK killings from the first murder to his capture.

The police department is passing out the coins to all law enforcement including the sheriff's deputies and FBI agents.

WPD's Deputy Chief, Tom Stolz, says "This was a way we can give officers something that would remind them of the great work they did and yet remind them of who we work for...for the victims of crime. It's a way to memorialize these victims in our organization essentially forever."

The coins have a gold wreath on one side, representing the highest honor of merit on one side.  The other side lists the names of all of Dennis Rader's victims.

Deputy Chief Stolz says they decided to give coins rather than badges because some people receiving the awards don't wear uniforms.

So far, about 900 coins have been given out.

During our interview with Deputy Chief Stolz, he didn't know the total cost of making the coins, but says the city of Wichita paid somewhere between $5 and $6,000 dollars.
