John Douglas on BTK

by Michael Schwanke by Michael Schwanke

He's the former head of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit and one of the first FBI profilers.  John Douglas has helped capture many serial killers and interviewed many others.

Douglas was called in to help in the BTK case in the early 1980's and says he interviewed Dennis Rader in prison.

Rader is the focus of Douglas' new book, "Inside the Mind of BTK: The True Story Behind the Thirty Year Hunt for the Notorious Wichita Serial Killer."

"What was interesting when I interviewed the BTK strangler is he's read my books. My books didn't cause him to kill but he read them and actually did a critique of my analysis of him which he said was very good," says Douglas.

Douglas was among several profilers asked to help in the investigation and like most of them he thought BTK was a loner.

"One of the areas I was wrong... I didn't think he would be married and if he was in a relationship there certainly would have been a divorce."

Former chief Richard LaMunyon says that profile was common, even though evidence pointed to a man who was likely involved in the community.

"Where we had some problems was general statements that came from profilers saying this individual is probably a loner, unable to develop lasting relationships with anyone and unable to hold down a job," says LaMunyon.

Douglas also claims he has new information about why Rader stopped and why there were gaps between the killings but won't release that information until his book comes out later this year.
