KWCH - Kansas News and Weather - Middle School Student Dies After Gym Class
ATCHISON, Kansas (AP) - An 11-year-old Atchison middle school student is dead after collapsing during physical education class.
Superintendent Steve Wiseman said the fifth grade girl at Atchison County Community Middle School collapsed yesterday while jogging warm-up laps. The student, who wasn't identified, was pronounced dead at Atchison Hospital an hour later.
Wiseman said the school had an emergency medical technician on scene immediately and used a defibrillator. A resource center was set-up at the school library with counselors from surrounding areas.
An autopsy was scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.
