What time does the 5-o'clock news start? Seems like the answer should be obvious.
But some of our viewers have pointed out that if you wait until straight up 5pm, you miss a minute or two of the newscast.
The reason is that the previous show, in our case, the Oprah Winfrey Show, ends around 4:58.
In previous times, stations would often fill the next two minutes with commercials, and start the news right on the hour.
Recently though, it's become common to "jump the start" and begin the newscast as soon as the previous show ends.
The idea is to grab the viewer right then, rather than give them a minute or two to tune away, or turn off.
