Taxes and politics can be confusing. We've been getting calls and e-mails from viewers wondering exactly how much they are actually paying in sales tax.
The question comes up because Kansas lawmakers are considering a 1% increase in the state sales tax, as a way to ease the budget problems.
The current state sales tax is 5.3%...but many viewers tell us their receipts show a higher amount.
That's because in addition to the state tax, many counties or cities have their own sales tax that is added on.
But again, the STATE sales tax is 5.3% right now...and may be going to 6.3%. Hope that clears things up, even though paying tax is never fun.
