It's easy for some people to see journalists and the media at large as irresponsible, sensationalistic ratings grabbers. Let me offer a different insight.
Once again this week, I saw our Eyewitness News leadership discuss and struggle with a tough journalistic issue...how to handle our coverage of the Westboro Baptist Church Funeral Protest case before the U-S Supreme Court.
Elsewhere on this website, you can see a detailed account of what we've decided and why.
The point here is, such discussions are nothing new at Eyewitness News. We don't flippantly put things on the air without regard to what is ethical and what would be best for our viewers and community.
That's especially important to someone in my position, with my face out front on our newscasts.
Fortunately, I can represent KWCH with confidence and pride.
The committment to quality journalism comes all the way from the top of our organization, our corporate owners at Schurz Communications, and runs through President & General Manager Joan Barrett, News Director Chad Cross, Managing Editor Kim Wilhelm, Executive Producer Christina Karaoli and all our producers, reporters, editors and photojournalists.
I've seen each of these people struggle with such questions and take them very seriously.
As our viewers, that's exactly what you deserve.
Roger
