For those of you ready to put Jeff Gordon in rocking chair, you might want to hold off. On Sunday the Rainbow Warrior proved he’s not quite ready for retirement. The kid still has it.
“You'd say, wow, you never know when that next one is going to come. I understand that better today than I ever have, just because the wins haven't come as often, and it seems like even when we've had race cars capable of winning we've been close,” said Gordon. “Just the little small circumstances could be all it takes sometimes to keep you out of victory lane, and it makes you realize how hard it is to line all those stars up to make it happen.”
Many people think because the wins don’t ‘happen’ as often as they used to, that Gordon is done. But let’s be honest, a Jeff Gordon on the down slope toward retirement is still better that 3/4ths of the field. Which is even more eveident now that Gordon has thrusted himself into the chase standings. He is now third, behind the Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson who are tied.
“We just want to win,” said Gordon. “We just want to win the races and win the championship. That's all that matters.”
Now whether they can win the title this season, or even deserve to be in the chase this season, is certainly up for debate. But you can’t really deny, the 24 has silenced those who thought he was done, at least for now.
“I feel like we deserve to be in it,” said Gordon. “I don't like how we got in it, being an added 13th team. You can dispute that all you want. But we're certainly not going to say no, we won't take it. We wanted to be in it. We feel like we were in a position to earn our way into it, and I think that this team would have performed like this whether we were in it or not.”
