Ships of doom: Some of history's worst shipwrecks
Nearly 10 months after the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia ran into rocks off the Tuscany coast, the ship remains capsized in shallow waters, a stark reminder of how a pleasure trip can go horribly wrong. The trade group for the world's cruise industry says cruising is extremely safe. Yet, disasters have occurred. Here are some of the worst passenger-ship disasters in modern history. Not included are accidents involving ferry ships and military vessels, which have also claimed thousands of lives.

Costa Concordia
The Costa Concordia, owned by a subsidiary of Miami-based Carnival Corp., struck rocks on Jan. 13, 2012 and flipped on its side, killing 32 people. The ship's captain faces several charges over his actions leading up to the accident and as the ship sunk.
