Ships of doom: Some of history's worst shipwrecks

Nearly 10 months after the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia ran into rocks off the Tuscany coast, the ship remains capsized in shallow waters, a stark reminder of how a pleasure trip can go horribly wrong. The trade group for the world's cruise industry says cruising is extremely safe. Yet, disasters have occurred. Here are some of the worst passenger-ship disasters in modern history. Not included are accidents involving ferry ships and military vessels, which have also claimed thousands of lives.
