Lunch while traveling can be a challenge because most of us jump into the closest fast food joint. Eating breakfast will help you avoid being hungry, but the trick is to be prepared to have something healthier.
Salad is an obvious choice for a healthy lunch, and looking for a salad bar makes sense (but be careful with the dressing).
Starbucks has some good prepared meals, including a cheese and fruit plate and pasta salads.
Look for wraps as a portable alternative. These are easily carried and a veggie wrap can be a great choice that you can pick up on the way to the plane.
Sandwiches can be an OK choice and Subway is pretty good because they have nutrition information on their sandwiches listed in every restaurant. They also have whole wheat bread. Be careful because some sandwiches are really high in calories.
Let's "Do Dinner" Right
When I travel I like to try to find a Mediterranean restaurant. The great thing about Greek, Lebanese or Turkish food is that there are usually mezza choices. These are small plates, such as stuffed grape leaves, hummus or baba ganoush. It's easy to overeat in any restaurant, so consider ordering two or three appetizers instead of a full main course. You'll not only eat less but be able to sample more great food.
Eat breakfast, plan for lunch, carry snacks and choose fish for dinner. I look for fish choices on the restaurant menu such as grilled or broiled with simple sauces. Think about where you are going and what you are going to eat ahead of time. You can eat great food and eat healthy on the road.
