Several groups will start circulating a petition across Kansas to ask Gov. Sam Brownback and the state legislature to not cut school funding.
The month long petition drive is the result of a partnership between the American Federation of Teachers-Kansas, Kansas Families for Education and Kansas United in Voice & Spirit.
It directly attacks the governor's proposal to change the school funding formula, saying Brownback's plan before the legislature is "inadequate and threatens the state's long tradition of giving every child a high quality public education.

PETITION KICKOFF CALLING FOR GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATORS
TO FUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Topeka, KS - On March 1, 2012 a petition will begin circulating across the state giving Kansans the opportunity to tell the governor and legislature they will not tolerate a state policy which erodes the public school system and puts children at risk. The governor’s proposal before the legislature is inadequate and threatens the state’s long tradition of giving every child a high quality public education.
The governor claims the current funding formula cannot be maintained while at the same time he is proposing tax breaks to corporations and the highest earners in the state. Quality public education is the single most critical investment the state can make for the future of our children.
Governor Brownback and some of his allies in the legislature have indicated they do not value an excellent public education for all Kansas children. Schools are the corner stone of the community. Parents, teachers, seniors, and business owners are alarmed about the new proposals currently being debated in the legislature. The proposed changes will make it harder for students to get the education they need to compete for jobs in today’s economy. It will also restrict Kansas students from gainful and competitive employment. The proposals do little to create jobs, and we are at a time when Kansas needs to focus on attracting new jobs.
The month long petition drive is being referred to as Kansas Madness in March and is produced in partnership with the AFT-Kansas, Kansas Families for Education, and Kansas United in Voice & Spirit. Citizens can sign the petition at www.ksmadness.com.
