Pittsburg State University in southeast Kansas has announced plans to offer a new program that will emphasize sustainability.

Graduates of the new track will earn a bachelor's degree in integrated studies with an emphasis in sustainability, society and resource management.

Jim Triplett, a professor in the biology department, developed the degree.  He told the Pittsburg Morning Sun that the program will train graduates to be mediators who can help organizations work together to solve sustainability problems.  He said graduates with the new degree will develop solid knowledge of biology, communications, geography and social sciences.

Triplett said he foresees graduates working in positions such as director of sustainability or as an emergency management coordinator, areas where ecological, social and political issues intersect.
