(WICHITA, Kan.)—
The first day of school is excitement enough for most students, and meeting their teacher for the first time, but some kids at Wichita's Chisholm Trail Elementary school have a celebrity teacher this year.
The contest recognizes the achievements of the women and their advocacy for people with disabilities.
Contestants included teachers, a scientist and a radio talk show host.
"We make an every day choice to overcome our disability and overcome the obstacles that we face daily," Nickel told Eyewitness News. "I think we're just there and we do what we do and if we inspire you by chance, then that's great."
Nickel's pageant platform focused on the capabilities of those with disabilities.
28 women competed this year and Nickel says she now has 27 new friends for life.
