It is still legal to drive and talk on your cell phone within the city limits of Valley Center.

On Tuesday night, the city council voted down an ordinance that would have banned the action.

City council members debated an ordinance that would have still allowed hands-free devices, but at Tuesday night's meeting they asked city staff to draft a new ordinance that would outlaw any use of a cell phone while driving.

Some council members questioned whether the ban was too intrusive, while others said it was a safety issue that would save lives.

The ban was blocked in a 5-3 vote.

This year, the State of Kansas passed a law that makes it illegal to text and drive.
