The Wichita River Festival will celebrate the city’s rich aviation history with a special tribute to all things “flight in the heart of the Air Capital.”

Several ‘aviation-inspired’ events will take place throughout the day on Sunday, June 1, in downtown Wichita, including the following:

Planes on Main: Historic and current planes will be on display in downtown Wichita. All planes on display are locally built in Wichita and can be seen on Main Street.

Wichita Aviation on Display: Walk inside Century II’s Exhibition Hall and view the historic aviation displays. These displays will  represent Wichita’s presence at air shows around the world.

Fly Like an Eagle: Take advantage of the opportunity to pilot the world’s only public access B-52 simulator during Riverfest! The simulator is built from an actual B-52 cockpit made from Boeing in Wichita. The cost to pilot the simulator is $1 per minute, with a 15 minute minimum (covers one solo pilot, or two co-pilots). The simulator also has two observation seats, which cost $5 per ride to occupy.

You can also experience the thrill of flying the iconic F4 fighter, which cost $1 per minute with a 10 minute minimum. A restored 737 cockpit will also be on static display. Make sure to stop by the display to sign up for your chance to win one of the five available day passes to the Kansas Aviation Museum.

Aviation Pioneers: Come out and celebrate our country’s rich aviation heritage! Get a chance to meet some of the famous aviators from our past, including Amelia Earhart, Clyde Cessna, and Katherine Wright (sister of the Wright Brothers).

The famous aviators will be present to share their trailblazing stories and memories. Presentations will start at 1 PM and will continue every 45 minutes throughout the rest of the afternoon. Also, don’t forget to get your picture taken with these famous aviators of yesteryear!

“Wing” Eating Contest: Pilot your way through a tasty dish of wings in the inaugural Riverfest Wing Eating Contest! Contestants will receive some great prizes, including cash!

  • Location: Food Court Stage

 

Rosie the Riveter Look A-Like Contest: Have fun, dress-up and join the Rosie the Riveter Look A-Like Contest! Rosie the Riveter was a cultural icon of the United States during World War II, representing the American women who worked in factories during WWII. Throw on your bandana and work clothes and compete in best representing the “We Can Do It,” icon. The contest winner will receive a brand new set of tools and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

Paper Airplane Drop: Build a paper airplane and get a chance to win up to $100 in cash! Individuals ages 5 to 17 can enter the contest, which consists of building a paper airplane and landing it on the target zone from the mezzanine in Century II.
