Pet owners beware. Dogs are becoming sick and it may be from food found on store shelves. The FDA has issued a warning against chicken jerky dog treats made in China. The notice states there may be a link between the food and illness.

"There's animals getting sick from an unknown cause," said Dr. Lance Blackburn of All Creatures Pet Hospital. "The FDA has tested the jerky treats; they are unable to find any contaminants. They are unable to find any infections agent. So at this point, unfortunately it's an association and we don't really have a true cause and effect."

A potential link between dog illness and chicken jerky products was first reported in 2007 when over 150 people lodged complaints. Since then, incidents were stagnant until this year. There are now over 70 cases the FDA is investigating and it all revolves around the Chinese chicken products.

"We don't know what we're looking for," explained Dr. Blackburn. "So that right there creates the uncertainty and creates the anxiety of how can we certify foods that are free from item X, if we don't know what item X is."

The FDA issued a warning, but no recall, so the items in question are still on Springfield shelves. Doctors said pet owners should check the labels carefully, just in case.

"We try to make the very best recommendations to our pet owners that we possibly can. In this particular case, all we can say is avoid the treats that have this composition from China until we know more," detailed Blackburn. "It can be very, very scary for pet owners. I think one of the things they worry about so much is that they want to give treats because there is a bond there. They want to give treats because they care about and love that animal, and then when something happens that destroys their confidence."

There are signs and symptoms to see if your pet is affected by the treats. The FDA warns against decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, increased water consumption and/or increased urination. If you are suspicious, take your dog to a trusted veterinarian immediately. If treated early, the animals can make a full recovery. If you believe your dog is a victim of bad treats, report the case to the FDA.
