The sweltering temperatures are not just making people suffer. Pets are bothered by this heat wave too.

With temperatures in the 90s, it is indeed the dog days of summer for animals like Sherlock, a poodle who took a walk in Kingston Wednesday. His owner cranked the air conditioning to keep him cool.

"Staying in the car with the air conditioning very cold, much colder than we keep it at home," said Kathy More of Carlisle.

Heat like this can really take its toll on pets.

Luzerne County humane officers said they get calls about animals left in parked vehicles or outside without water.

"It's all across the whole county, you know. People, whether they just don't care or just don't think you know dogs have lived outside they'll be okay," said Humane Officer Deb Lamoreaux of the Luzerne County S.P.C.A.

Humane officers said if you do see an animal in distress, call the police. They can respond faster than humane officers who have to cover all of Luzerne County and may not be close by.

Pet owners said they cannot imagine forgetting about man's best friend when things get hot.

"We actually freeze water in the freezer and when it melts he gets the water from that and keeps him pretty cool. Like what he doesn't drink out of the bowl, we dump on him and stuff and he likes it," said Faith Beamer of Wilkes-Barre about her pooch.
