The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the man killed in a crash on Wednesday as 69-year-old Ricardo Torres of Augusta.
KHP says Torres, who was driving a KHP motorist-assist vehicle, was merging from the center median into the southbound lanes of I-135 when he was struck from behind by a semi.
The KHP says the crash investigation is ongoing and asks for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information on what happened to contact Lt. Aaron McGuire at 316-744-0451.
Torres was taken to Via Christi St. Francis is very critical condition but died from his injuries. The KHP says he served as a Motorist Assist Technician since May 2015.
The driver of the semi was not hurt.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Crittenden says the driver of the KHP motorist-assist vehicle died from his injuries in Wednesday afternoon's crash near 61st North on Interstate 135 in Park City.
Crittenden says the driver was in the median, traveling southbound prior to the collision and was not attempting to make a U-turn as had been speculated earlier in the investigation. Crittenden says the crash, reported about 4 p.m., remains under investigation.
All lanes of I-135 are back open.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 135 reopened Wednesday night after an injury crash involving a motorist assist vehicle with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Emergency crews closed the road Wednesday afternoon due to a crash the crash that left one person critically hurt.
Trooper Chad Crittenden said a KHP motorist assist vehicle made a U-turn through the median to respond to a call when it was struck by an oncoming semi.
The pickup caught fire and the driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Crittenden said any is crash terrible, but this one hit close.
"When it's one of our own it's hard. We know the people and work with the people every day. And when someone's injured like that out here, it does hurt because it hits close because we know these people," he said.
One person is hurt in a crash at I-135 and 61st Street North in Park City.
Dispatchers confirm is in very critical condition or not breathing.
The southbound ramp to 61st Street is closed while crews work the crash.
