American Legion post opens clothing closet to help fellow veterans

WICHITA, Kan. Veterans in Wichita now have a new place to get new clothes.

The American Legion Post 256 at 4301 W. Pawnee opened its veterans' closet Sunday. The closet is open for veterans who may need new clothes for jobs or any other purpose to pick them up free of charge, regardless of the situation they're in.

All they have to do is show them their driver's licenses or another piece of paperwork that proves they are veterans.

"We decided that there are plenty of closed closets out there, but some of the veterans might not be comfortable going in because of what they've gone through, and they may not feel they're welcomed, and so they don't want to go," says Mary Lych-Clay with American Legion Post 256. "We thought maybe if we opened one here at the American Legion, they'd feel more comfortable coming in with their family, getting the clothes and stuff they need."

The veterans' closet will be open on the third Sunday and Monday of each month. Donations are also welcome.
