Cowley County Sheriff's Office warns of jury duty scam

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. The Cowley County Sheriff's Office warns of a scam targeting citizens in the county with a false call threatening legal trouble.

The sheriff's office says a there have been reports of someone calling Cowley County citizens, identifying themselves as Deputy Cook with the Cowley County Sheriff's Office. "Deputy Cook" contacts people in regards to a warrant for failure to report for jury duty.

"There is no one employed with the Cowley County Sheriff's Office with the name of Cook and our deputies do not call people with warrants," the sheriff's office says. "If you receive a call similar to this, please call our office and speak with one of our deputies about the incident."

The sheriff's office says the fake caller has given the number of 620-222-9445 to call back if they become disconnected. Do not call that number and report to the actual sheriff's office if you hear from "Deputy Cook."

"We are always looking out for the safety of our citizens in Cowley County," the sheriff's office says.
