Haskell County Sheriff's Office warns of Southern Pioneer phone scam

HASKELL COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) The Haskell County Sheriff's Office wants to warn you about a new phone scam so you don't fall for it.

Deputies say scammers are posing as Southern Pioneer representatives to solicit money.

The caller will notify you of an overdue bill to Southern Pioneer, and if not paid will result in your electricity being shut off.

Scammers will provide you with the call back number for the Medicine Lodge office so you can purchase a Green Dot card in the amount of the bill.

If you receive a call, do not dial the number that they are asking you to call or provide any credit card, financial, or personal information.

Investigators say this scam is primarily directed at businesses since homes will generally not be shut-off during cold periods.

Southern Pioneer will never ask for you to pay in that manner.
