DODGE CITY, Kan. Keeping cool costs money as cranking up your air conditioner requires extra electricity use.
How much extra use does it cost?
Victory Electric in Dodge City says increased usage due to the heat typically costs customers $50 to $150 extra each month. The company recently created a new tool called My Meter where customers can track how much energy they use, even down to the minute.
"Obviously with the higher temperatures, (this) means higher electric usage. We're getting lots of calls," says Jerri Imgarten with Victory Electric. "With these high temperatures, people want to stay cool and stay comfortable That unfortunately results in higher energy costs."
Westar Energy has a similar feature for customers. Utility officials say they hope this information keeps you from being surprised at the end of the month when you get your bill.
