WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Holiday shopping season is here and our Factfinder 12 investigative team wants you to stay safe and smart.
Throughout the month of December and even into January Eyewitness News gots you covered. This week, we're taking a close look at toys. You have your list ready to go but what if the toy you thought you bought isn't what's inside?
To explain this one, we take you inside Toy Depot in Hutchinson. The owner, Mark Buckley says his small shop allows him to pay close attention to everything and everyone.
"In a store like this I have people like Dick and Laura who work for me and they make sure to take their time," says Buckley.
He is all about honest business and giving people the holiday experience. That is why he's able to avoid this week's problem of buying a toy and finding something else in the box.
Factfinder 12 investigator Devon Fasbinder found that it happens across Wichita. In just a few weeks, she found examples of the wrong toy being in the box.
Denise Groene with the Better Business Bureau says if this happens, you shouldn't wait.
"The best thing to do would be to immediately go back to that retailer. Bring your receipt, bring the box and explain what happened," says Groene.
She says you should be able to get it remedied but to keep in mind where you're shopping.
Buckley says that issue won't happen in his store. He checks every return.
"I match the item to what it should be so like on the internet I have a number of sites I use whether it's a Star Wars piece, a G.I. Joe and I have special sites that show me every piece that goes with that particular item," he says.
Not every store is like Toy Depot so what can you do? Here are a few tips.
Make sure to contact your retailer right away if your package has the wrong item. Keep your receipt and bring it with you.
If a retailer won't work with you, contact the BBB or a consumer agency to get help and finally, pay close attention. If you can see the toy, make sure it's correct.
