WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- As Wichita State waits to find out if it will be added as the 12th basketball member of the AAC tomorrow, former Shocker basketball greats weighed in on what the move would mean.
Lynbert "Cheese" Johnson played for the Shockers from 1975-79. He was the Missouri Valley Conference "Newcomer of the Year" in 1976, and a first-team selection in '77 and '79.
He said the Valley was strong in the '70s, but it's time for the Shockers to move on.
"The valley was tough from top to bottom, and that's what everyone wants to see, competitive games," he said. "So if and when they get accepted to the new league, that's what fans will see, competitive games."
Xavier McDaniel played in 1981-85. "X-Man" was the Missouri Valley Conference MVP and led the nation in scoring (27.4) and rebounding (15.0) his senior season.
With that being said, X-Man thinks the Valley is no place for the current-day Shockers.
"The Missouri Valley is kind of like the dinosaur of basketball, you know what i'm saying?" he said. "Cincinnati, Louisville, all of these teams have moved out over the years. Creighton moved out. So I think it was time for us to move. I hate to see it but I think it was time to go."
