Hospital warns of scam targeting residents in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY, Kan. The Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center warns of a scam where someone claiming to represent the hospital calls people asking for credit card information to process a payment.

The Smith County Memorial Hospital says the calls are not coming from its facility. The hospital says its staff may make calls about outstanding accounts, but "you will never receive a call from Smith County Memorial Hospital staff asking for payment unless you have first received a written statement from us about the amount owed."

"If at any time you receive a call that caller ID says is from (Smith County Memorial Hospital) and you have any reason to question the validity of the call, hang up and call SCMH from your telephone," the hospital says. "If the call was valid, we will be able to tell you so, and if it was not valid, you can help us trace the source of these malicious calls."
