How you can prepare for the cold

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) The biggest thing you'll notice as you step outside is the wind. You'll definitely want to grab a jacket and layer up.

Try using a jacket with layers which will help to cut down on the wind.

It's the first time in a while kids will need more than a light jacket at the bus stop.

Last year, we told you about how Colvin Elementry was in need of coats for its students.

This year, they are in good shape. Now is the time to start going through those coat closets to see if you have any extras that kids in need can use.

If you are thinking about cranking up the heat in the next few days, there are things you should keep your eye on.

First, check your air filter, it's an important part of a home heating system.

The next thing involves your nose, you'll probably smell a little bit of something burning. That's almost always dust burning.

If the smell doesn't go away after a little while you may want to call someone.

"You have a high limit switch, which may be setting the heat exchanger at several hundred degrees. You don't want the exchanger to all of the sudden go to 500 and start a fire risk. That's safety," says John Nicholas.

There are also some things you can do to keep your energy costs low.

You can open your interior doors to make sure air can flow all across your home.
