KS Proud: Thousands raised for Ashland fire relief

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. "Helping others," that's what Principal of Walton Rural Life Jason Chalashtari said students were doing when they raised nearly $2,500 for wildfire recovery efforts in Ashland, Kansas.

Chalashtari says the project was about caring for the agriculture community and thinking of helping fellow Kansans.

Walton Rural Life Center is an agricultural charter elementary school in Harvey County.

The school raised the total $2,425 through several fundraisers including a change collection and a "Barbecue and Bluegrass" event. The Ashland fire burned more than 350 thousand acres and destroyed a dozen homes.

The students tracked their efforts on a bulletin board to give the kids a visual representation of their efforts. The money raised is enough to buy 61 round hay bales or 241 fence posts.
