Kansas Fire Marshal declares deadly Pratt house fire 'undetermined'

PRATT, Kan. (KWCH) We may never know how a deadly house fire started in the city of Pratt on Jan. 25, 2018, that's according to the Kansas Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The investigation division said it closed its investigation Monday and classified the fire as undetermined.

"After being unable to eliminate careless smoking or a child playing with a lighter as the cause of the fire, the investigative team classified it as undetermined," said the state fire marshal's office.

Fire crews said Charee Wheatley and her four children who ranged in age from four months to four years old were trapped in the basement of the home and died in the fire.

The fire marshal's office said the fire originated in the central living area of the basement.

There were no smoke alarms found in the residence.
