Today is National Clean Out Your Computer Day. Keeping your computer clean can be a daunting task.
Here's what you need to know. If you have a Windows PC, you can clean up quickly and easily by doing a "Disk Cleanup". Just click the Start Menu, then All Programs, Accessories and Disk Cleanup.
Choose which drive you'd like to clean up and then click on all of the items you want to get rid of.
This will only remove temporary files. It won't remove anything like documents, photos or any important files.
Mac computers have their own automatic cleanup program, so you don't need to run any programs to clean things up.
YOu may have heard of programs called Registry Cleaners. Those clean out things like applications settings, passwords and other settings.
We spoke with a tech expert who says they can do more harm than good, so don't use them.
If things are bogged down too much on your computer, you could consider replacing the hard drive.
“I can tell you one of the best things you could possibly do, and you can take a 7-year-old laptop and make it run like it’s almost new is to change out the hard drive in it," said tech expert Bill Ramsey. "Put in what’s called an SSD drive and your computer will run lightning fast.”
There aren't any programs out there that can effectively help you delete other types of files. You will need to go through things like pictures and documents manually to delete them.
Ramsay suggests doing that weekly to help keep up with the amount of files you have on your PC.
