WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) A popular app is making the WSU West campus a magnet for accidents.
A 25-year-old man admitted to hitting a light pole with his vehicle while driving in the campus parking lot and playing Pokemon Go.
Maize police say the man said he was trying to catch one of the virtual characters when he hit the pole. He suffered minor injuries to his head and arm. He also totaled his vehicle.
WSU West campus director Augustine Iacopelli says the university has been getting a lot of company since Pokemon Go came out. He says he knows when a person is playing the game because they stop in front of the main door and drive around in a circle to the corner.
Iacopelli says this is the second accident this week. He asks drivers not play the game and drive at the same time.
"I think it's great that people are getting out and having fun with the game, but we are very concerned with the safety of our students and players. So, please, set the phone aside and just drive," said Iacopelli.
Maize police did not ticket the driver because the accident occurred on private property.
They say Wichita State police are aware of the situation, and campus officers can give tickets if they choose.
