WICHITA, Kan. A crowd gathered Friday at McConnell Air Force Base celebrated the life of Don, a military working dog who served his country until his final days.
Don, who served with the 22nd Security Force Squadron at McConnell died from cancer in December. His service to his country included deployments to Kuwait and Qatar and years of work in explosive detection and secret service missions across the U.S.
In Friday's memorial, the veteran K-9 was remembered as "a great cop and friend."
"Rest in peace, Don. Your watch is over." an Air Force official said.
Don took his job seriously and knew when it was time to get to work, but he was also friendly, those who knew him say.
He was described as playful and brought laughter to his handlers while carrying on his duties.
Don received a certificate for his service and military salutes from fellow service dogs and their handlers as they said their final goodbyes to a friend who put his life on the line.
