WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wichita Police community continues to mourn the loss of one of their own. Rooster, a police K9 was shot and killed during an altercation, Sunday.
Maricel Arias just a few doors down from where everything happened. She said she didn't know what to think when she saw the police but walked inside to stay out of the way.
"I was scared," Arias said. "Because, you know, here is quiet. "
Officers said a female victim told them a man inside a home threatened to kill her. Police were trying to talk to him when a 25-year-old man walked out but ignored police orders. Officers then released Rooster, a five-year-old K-9 veteran with the department, to try to keep the man from going back inside. Investigators said they believe that's when the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Rooster. Police said another officer saw the gun fire in the direction of police, so that officer shot the suspect, who later died at the hospital.
Linda Ivie lives in the area. She said she is still trying to piece together what happened.
"I've been her 23 years and we've never had anything like this," Ivie said.
We expect to learn more about the investigation at a police briefing Monday.
