Wichita man arrested in rape of 17-year-old in Okla.

CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. Update Jan. 16:

The Canadian County Sheriff's Office in Oklahoma says media coverage led to the arrest of a Wichita man accused of rape.

The sheriff's office released a forensic sketch of the suspect on Thursday, Jan. 11 and asked for the public's help to locate him.

"Within a few hours Investigators were receiving information on the case, and by 10 O’Clock p.m. a suspect was not only identified but in custody," said the sheriff's office in a release.

The sheriff's office says they received an anonymous telephone tip from Wichita. The information was then provided to the Wichita police detectives who located the suspect and detained him. Canadian County investigators then obtained an arrest warrant to hold the suspect.

“If we hadn’t received the news coverage and social media exposure that we did, we may not have caught up to him; as the suspect had a plane ticket out of the country, to Vietnam when Wichita PD picked him up,” said Chris West, Canadian County Sheriff.

On Friday, Jan. 12, Canadian County investigators traveled to Wichita, interviewed the suspect, and identified him 20-year-old Hoang Vinh Huy Tran, of Wichita, and a citizen of the Republic of Vietnam. They also processed the 2017 Toyota Camry used during the crime.

Based on the interview and processing of Tran’s vehicle, Canadian County investigators were able to collect enough information and physical evidence to establish Tran as the suspect in the Dec.18 kidnapping and rape in Canadian County.

Tran waived extradition to Oklahoma on Tuesday and is currently being held at the Sedgwick County jail in Kansas.

He is awaiting transfer to Canadian County, Oklahoma where charges will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.

The Canadian County, Okla. Sheriff's Office is searching for a man in connection with the rape of a 17-year-old girl in the county. The teen says that man, in part, told her he was 21 years old and had lived in Wichita before moving to Oklahoma City.

The sheriff's office says on Dec. 18, it received a call from a man saying a teen approached his home and knocked on his door. When the man answered, she told him she had been abducted and raped, the sheriff's office says.

The teen, from south Oklahoma City, was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, the sheriff's office says.

The sheriff's office says the teen told investigators she was walking to work on the afternoon of Dec. 18 when a man she didn't know offered her a ride. The teen said she accepted the ride because she was running late.

The man drove to more secluded county roads and assaulted the teen, she told investigators.

"The young girl told investigators that her assailant had a large knife and that he threatened to kill her with it if she attempted to escape," the Canadian County Sheriff's Office says.

After being held for about three hours, the teen said she was able to escape.

The man she says assaulted her is described as being of Asian descent, standing about 5'6, weighing about 140 to 150 pounds with brown eyes, and black hair, shaved on the sides with a mohawk on top.

The teen described the man as having acne on his face, chest and back. She says he was left-handed and had a large tattoo of an owl on the inside of his left arm that extended from his elbow to his wrist.

The teen said the man told her his name was "Chin" or "Chan," that he worked in a nail salon, that he was 21-years-old and that he had just moved to Oklahoma City after previously living in Wichita.

The teen told investigators the man was driving a late model silver Subaru or Nissan sedan with black interior.

The sheriff's office says, "Anyone with information leading to the identity of the suspect is requested to contact the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office at 405-262-3434 and ask for Lieutenant Mike Grimes."
