Plans in works for new hotel, convention center in Hays

HAYS, Kan. An addition to the Hays community could be on the way in the form of an 8,000 square-foot convention center.

A Wichita developer is working with Hays city officials and economic developers to build a visitors hotel and convention center on property behind the city's Walmart, easily accessible from Interstate 70.

If the Hays City Commission green lights the project, the hotel will be connected to the convention center.

Melissa Dixon, director of the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau says the convention center would help Hays compete with other cities in the area.

"We do have a lot of groups that say, 'we wish we could get back to hays and we just can't accommodate them right now," Dixon says. "A new facility would help us get there."

City Commissioners in Hays will review the project at its meeting Thursday.
