Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office warns about spoofing scam

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office wants to warn the public about the latest spoofing scam.

The district attorney's office says a scam artist is using its phone number to try and convince people that they owe money to cover a debt.

The Consumer Protection Division of the DA’s Office received a call from a local bankruptcy attorney stating someone had called one of his clients and told the woman she owed a debt and needed to pay immediately.

The bankruptcy attorney called the number given to the client and asked where the man practiced law and what his bar number was. The scammer became angry and hung up.

The man is spoofing the number to the District Attorney’s Office, 316-660-3600.

"Spoofing" occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to a caller ID display to disguise the caller’s identity.

The District Attorney’s Office says its office does not make phone calls of this nature.

To contact the Consumer Protection Division of the District Attorney’s Office, call 660-3653.
