The Marines and Sailors of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and USS Bonhomme Richard (LDH 6) Expeditionary Strike Group joined together to honor and remember the three U.S. Marines lost off the coast of Australia.
The service honored 1st Lt. Benjamin Cross, Cpl. Nathaniel Ordway, and Pfc. Ruben Velasco during a sunset memorial aboard the Bonhomme Richard.
The service took place August 9th.
The three Marines were lost after their MV-22, an aircraft known as an Osprey, crashed into the sea off the eastern coast of Australia.
23 of the 26 personnel on board the Osprey were rescued; three remain missing.
The aircraft had launched from the USS Bonhomme Richard (LDH 6) and was conducting regularly scheduled operations when a "mishap" occurred.
The heli-plane aircraft was eventually located and recovered. The three remaining Marines who were on board at the time of the crash are still missing and presumed to be dead.
