Wichita barbershops give free haircuts for students heading back to school

WICHITA, Kan. A pair of Wichita barbershops gave back to local students Sunday, giving them fresh looks ahead of a new school year.

Fusionz Barbershop (1702 S. Broadway) and Prime Time Barbershop (727 W. 13th) gave free haircuts to students Sunday. Students in the Wichita school district head back to the classroom Wednesday (Aug. 23).

Prime Time offered the free haircuts and backpacks with supplies from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Fusionz offered the free haircuts until 8 p.m.

Sunday marked the second year that Fusionz has provided free haircuts for kids going back to school.

At just 21 years old, Luis Moreno owns the shop. He opened Fusionz with a friend two years ago.

"We've been really lucky to start a business so young (and) it's amazing, you know," Moreno says. "And (the free haircuts are) kind of our way of giving back."

Sunday morning, Moreno says he was prepared to put in at least 12 hours of work for the free-haircut event. He says the long hours on their feet are worth it.

"Every kid deserves to have that fresh look, you know," he says. "Fresh start. It makes them feel good and it makes us feel good."
