Wichita city council approves marijuana ordinance

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) If Wichita police catch you with marijuana, your penalty has just been lowered.

Wichita city council members approved changes to the local marijuana ordinance Tuesday morning.

It means penalties will be lowered for people caught with marijuana for the first time as well as people with small amounts.

People with less than 32 grams on a first offense will face a presumptive penalty of $50 plus court costs.

The fine for first-time possession will also be lowered from $2,500 to $1,000 and possibly up to six months in jail.
