Wildfire puts Goddard school district on alert

GODDARD, Kan. One of several grass fires across Kansas Tuesday burned acreage near Goddard and had the school district on high alert.

Tuesday morning, some parents of students at Goddard High School, Goddard Middle School, Challenger Intermediate School and Oak Street and Clark Davidson elementary schools were notified of a grass fire danger to those schools.

Dana Boxa with Goddard Schools says he and other staff members called about 100 families with students at those schools to let them know about the grass fire that was only about four miles southwest of Clark Davidson Elementary.

Crews successfully extinguished Tuesday's fire. Boxa says the district did let parents know they could pick up their children early and if they wanted their children to leave but weren't able to get them, buses were available.
