Inmate dies after being found unresponsive in Russell County Jail

RUSSELL COUNTY, Kan. The Russell County Sheriff's Office reports an inmate died after being found unresponsive at the county jail Tuesday night.

At about 11:50 p.m., the sheriff's office says the 63-year-old woman was found unresponsive during a routine check by corrections staff.

"Additional Russell County officers and EMS were contacted and responded to the jail," the sheriff's office says.

The woman was transported to the Russell Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead, the sheriff's office says.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified of the woman's death and an autopsy was performed. The results of that autopsy are pending.

The Russell County Sheriff's Office is not releasing the woman's name until her family is notified.

The sheriff's office says the woman was arrested Tuesday and transported to the jail on charges of criminal threat and disorderly conduct.
