Former Fort Hays point guard Craig Nicholson is going pro. Nicholson announced he signed with Romanian professional basketball team Cuza Sport Braila in Braila, Romania. He hired an agent earlier this year but said he was contacted directly by the coach and president of Cuza Sport Braila.
“It was exciting, I’ve been waiting for that moment and all I needed was that one guy to be interested in me and prove to people that I can play,” Nicholson said.
He signed a two year contract with an opt out clause after one year depending on the team’s record.
“My phone was blowing up all day but all my friends and family were happy for me, they knew that’s what I’ve been wanting to do for a very long time,” he said.
A four time all MIAA selection at Fort Hays, Nicholson’s excited about playing with professionals.
“They play a lot more smarter and they don’t play such a fast paced as they do in America,” he said. “You just gotta play a lot smarter over there and make the right reads on offense.”
He dreamt about playing professional basketball as a kid but stayed calm while signing the contract.
“It was kind of surreal, I was just kind of in the moment, I didn’t think too much about it because I’ve just always imagined myself signing a contract anyways,” he said. “Ever since I was a little kid I’ve just wanted to play professional.”
A fantastic high school and college player, Nicholson is ready for the next challenge.
“The main reason I went to Romania is because I’ll be able to get my name out there in Europe and if I do have a good first season than teams will start recognizing me and be interested in me,” he said.
