Mayor announces new stadium and team; leaves questions for current occupants

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- The dominoes are falling after Mayor Jeff Longwell announced Thursday that a new baseball stadium is coming to downtown Wichita.

Aug, 13, 2016; Wichita, Kansas, ; The NBC Championship was played at Lawrence Dumont Stadium Saturday night. The Santa Barbara Foresters beat the Hays Larks 6-2

NBC World Series General Manager Kevin Jenks said they're in talks with Wichita State to move the tournament to Eck Stadium in 2019.

They intend to play this upcoming tournament at Lawrence-Dumont, where it has been for all 82 years of its existence.

Meanwhile, the Wichita Wingnuts say they plan to stay at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium for the foreseeable future. The team declined to comment any further.

Mayor Longwell said he appreciates the work the Wingnuts have put in throughout their nine-year tenure.
"Everyone keeps thinking that I don't appreciate the Wingnuts," he said. "The Wingnuts have done an excellent job since the time affiliated baseball left. Now we have our opportunity to build a new baseball stadium and bring affiliation back, but we can't do it unless we bring an affiliated team back."

Mayor Longwell said an affiliated team is in the works, but Major League Baseball must sign-off on the deal before he can reveal the identity of the new team.

That announcement could come as early as the MLB Winter Meetings next week in Orlando.
