Wichita mayor addresses plan for MLB-affiliated team

WICHITA, Kan. Wichita's mayor says 2018 could be a good year for baseball fans in the city.

Thursday, Mayor Jeff Longwell didn't reveal much about where a minor league team -- affiliated with Major League Baseball -- would come from other than to rule out the states of Hawaii and Alaska.

Longwell says he recently received a text message from the owner of a minor league team possibly eyeing Wichita for its new home. Longwell says that message said, "Looking forward to 2018."

Longwell has been pushing to bring back a baseball team affiliated with the Major Leagues instead of an independent team like Wichita has now with the Wingnuts.

If a minor league team comes to Wichita, plans call for it to move into a new stadium replacing Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Longwell says an announcement could come at any time.
